Literacy

Language

At Glendal Primary School, the Language strand is supported through explicit instruction in phonics, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. From Foundation to Year 2, we implement the Little Learners Love Literacy program, a structured and evidence-based phonics approach that builds strong decoding and encoding skills. Students engage in daily phonemic awareness activities, blending and segmenting sounds, and applying their knowledge to reading and spelling tasks.

As students progress, they explore increasingly complex language features, including syntax, punctuation, and word choice, which are further developed through our writing program using the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This framework helps students understand and apply key elements of effective writing, such as sentence fluency, conventions, and voice, while building a rich vocabulary and understanding of how language works.

Literature

Our Literature strand is designed to foster a love of reading and an appreciation for diverse texts and perspectives. Students engage with rich texts across all year levels, including picture books, novels, poetry, and nonfiction, selected to reflect a range of cultures, voices, and themes.

These texts serve as springboards for deep comprehension work, including predicting, inferring, summarising, and analysing. In the middle and upper years, students participate in Literature Circles, where they explore texts collaboratively, taking on roles such as summariser, questioner, and connector. This structure promotes critical thinking, peer discussion, and a deeper engagement with literature.

Through these experiences, students learn to interpret and respond to texts thoughtfully, developing empathy and an understanding of literary techniques and author intent.

Literacy

The Literacy strand at Glendal Primary School focuses on developing students’ ability to use language effectively for a range of purposes and audiences. Our writing program, guided by the 6+1 Traits, encourages students to plan, draft, revise, and publish texts across various genres, with an emphasis on clarity, coherence, and creativity.

Students are supported to become confident communicators through regular opportunities for speaking and listening, including oral presentations, collaborative discussions, and reflective conversations. These experiences build essential communication skills and support the development of active listening, respectful dialogue, and persuasive speaking.

Literacy learning is differentiated to meet individual needs, with formative assessment guiding instruction and goal setting. By integrating reading, writing, speaking, and listening in meaningful contexts, we empower students to become literate, articulate, and thoughtful contributors to their communities.
